Sponsorship

Espwa Demen Mission has two sponsorship programs. One providing for the education of school aged children, whom there are currently 37 (14 of these have sponsors). And the other assists students who have graduated high school with learning a profitable life skill. There are 2 graduates in that program currently. 

Student Sponsorship

While we hope to one day open our own school, our students are currently spread out across different reputable private Christian schools in the area. Sponsorship pays for their bi-annual tuition fees and helps cover the other costs of education including: uniforms, books, school shoes, and exam fees. 

Our Student Sponsorship program is by far the biggest focus area of our ministry. Why?

Many parents in Haiti are faced with tough choices when it comes to their children. Countless mothers and fathers make the decision to send their children to live with other family members, in an orphanage, or another arrangement. One of the huge reasons being, they want their children to have an education but they just can’t afford the cost of schooling.

These children are put under another’s care. Living with relatives they are often given many tasks around the home in order to earn their keep, becoming Resteveks (child servants). Sometimes they are mistreated or not allowed to go to school after all. In the orphanage scenario there is often abuse on top of the normal trauma of growing up in an institutional setting instead of a home.

But there is a better way! So many of these parents want to keep their children. Through this program we come alongside families of low income. Families who value their children and desire good for them. 

In turn these kids are growing up with the potential of finding a good job in adulthood and breaking the cycle of poverty for their family!

Graduate Sponsorship

You may be wondering what happens when a student in our scholarship program graduates from highschool. Well, as often as possible we seek to continue to support our graduates as they seek to learn a skill that will help them secure a job. 

For this purpose we created a further education program. A student might choose to go on to learn cosmetology, tailoring, masonry, nursing, carpentry, or simply go to work as a taxi driver. Whatever they are passionate about and see an opportunity to get a job in, we seek to support them. 

The continued education of our graduates is dependent upon sponsorship, we encourage sponsors of a student who graduates from high school to continue supporting them through their vocational training. Either exclusively or as a partial sponsor. 

The cost of sponsoring a graduate is $50 per month or $600 a year
